1-Day Intensive Course in the Application of the Perception-Action Approach

Emerging evidence highlights the role of the perception-action-cognition relationship in development, including its effect on postural control, feeding, respiration, phonation, and attention. Real-time observation of spontaneous movement and functional performance, clinical reasoning and intervention strategies will be emphasized.

Participants will engage in structured video analysis and guided discussion to sharpen observational skills and clinical reasoning. Hands-on assisted intervention experiences will demonstrate how perception-action- cognition, and its application can be applied across pediatric populations. Emphasis will be placed on coaching and mentoring to refine how clinicians observe and adapt intervention strategies moment by moment.

COURSE FORMAT  
In-person, one-day intensive with integrated video analysis, guided discussion, and hands-on assisted intervention practice

Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists will each extract from the course material information that is useful in their discipline-specific interventions.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:  

  1. Integrate perception-action approach concepts during real-time observation and intervention to inform clinical decision-making.
  2. Design and demonstrate intervention strategies that incorporate environmental modification, informational touch, and caregiver instruction while promoting active child participation.
  3. Analyze hands-on intervention sessions to determine how perception-action theory influenced clinical reasoning and intervention choices.
  4. Modify intervention strategies, task demands, and environmental conditions based on child performance to support motor learning, functional outcomes, and global development.

Lisa N. Scher is a physical therapist and Certified Perception-Action Approach Instructor who has presented nationally and internationally to numerous groups of pediatric physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists and at national conferences. She has over 40 years of experience providing physical therapy services in a variety of practice settings, including over 15 years as the owner of a private pediatric practice.  Ms. Scher is a founding member, past President and current Chair of Marketing of the Institute for Perception-Action Approach. She is working privately providing direct patient care and mentoring of therapists.
